1892 – 1948Manuel Roxas (1892-1948)Died 15 April 1948, aged 56Manuel Roxas, the first president of the independent Republic of the Philippines, died of a heart attack while still in office on April 15, 1948. He had led the country through its formal independence from the United States in 1946 and the difficult early years of postwar reconstruction. His sudden death made him the first Philippine president to die in office.
