1948Bogotazo riots erupt in ColombiaAssassination of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán sparks days of violent unrestThe assassination of popular Liberal leader Jorge Eliécer Gaitán in Bogotá on April 9, 1948, triggered massive riots that killed thousands and destroyed much of the city center. The unrest, known as the Bogotazo, marked the start of a decade of political violence in Colombia known as La Violencia. It coincided with the international conference then underway to found the Organization of American States.
