1948World Health Organization establishedUnited Nations agency for international public health begins operatingThe constitution of the World Health Organization came into force on April 7, 1948, a date still marked annually as World Health Day. Headquartered in Geneva, the WHO absorbed the health functions of earlier international bodies. It went on to coordinate major campaigns against smallpox, malaria, and other diseases.
