1807Aaron Burr acquitted of treasonFormer US vice president cleared in conspiracy trialA federal jury in Richmond, Virginia acquitted former Vice President Aaron Burr of treason on 1 September 1807, after prosecutors failed to prove he had plotted to seize western territory and form a breakaway nation. Chief Justice John Marshall presided and set a narrow legal definition of treason. The trial was one of the most sensational political events of the early American republic.
1807Bombardment of CopenhagenRoyal Navy shells the Danish capital to seize its fleetA British fleet bombarded Copenhagen from 2 to 5 September 1807 to prevent the Danish navy from falling into French hands, killing hundreds of civilians and destroying much of the city center. Denmark surrendered its fleet and subsequently allied with Napoleon, launching the Anglo-Danish Gunboat War. The attack was widely condemned as a pre-emptive strike on a neutral power.
