1807 – 1882Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)Died 24 March 1882, aged 75Longfellow was the most popular American poet of his era, known for works including "Paul Revere's Ride," "The Song of Hiawatha," and "Evangeline." His verse was widely read on both sides of the Atlantic and translated into numerous languages. He died at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

He had built one of the era's foremost natural history collections but also promoted scientifically discredited racial theories that drew criticism even in his lifetime.

He went to Vienna during the October Uprising and was arrested when imperial troops took the city. He was executed despite his parliamentary immunity and became a martyr of the 1848 revolution.
