1725 – 1807Pasquale Paoli (1725-1807)Died 5 February 1807, aged 81Pasquale Paoli was a Corsican statesman and military leader who led Corsica's independence movement and drafted one of the first constitutions based on Enlightenment principles. After the French conquest he spent much of his life in exile in England. He died in London on 5 February 1807.
1807Battle of EylauBloody stalemate between Napoleon and Russian forcesFrench and Russian armies fought a brutal, inconclusive battle near Eylau in East Prussia on 7-8 February 1807, suffering roughly 25,000 casualties on each side. Napoleon claimed victory but failed to destroy the Russian army. The carnage shocked contemporaries and delayed further campaigning until spring.
