1807Bombardment of CopenhagenRoyal Navy shells the Danish capital to seize its fleetA British fleet bombarded Copenhagen from 2 to 5 September 1807 to prevent the Danish navy from falling into French hands, killing hundreds of civilians and destroying much of the city center. Denmark surrendered its fleet and subsequently allied with Napoleon, launching the Anglo-Danish Gunboat War. The attack was widely condemned as a pre-emptive strike on a neutral power.
