1807Aaron Burr acquitted of treasonFormer US vice president cleared in conspiracy trialA federal jury in Richmond, Virginia acquitted former Vice President Aaron Burr of treason on 1 September 1807, after prosecutors failed to prove he had plotted to seize western territory and form a breakaway nation. Chief Justice John Marshall presided and set a narrow legal definition of treason. The trial was one of the most sensational political events of the early American republic.
