1841 – 1921Nicholas I of Montenegro (1841-1921)Died 1 March 1921, aged 79Nicholas I, the last king of Montenegro, died in exile in Antibes, France, having ruled first as prince and then as king from 1860 until his kingdom was absorbed into the new Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918. He was known across Europe's royal houses as the "father-in-law of Europe" for marrying his daughters into several reigning dynasties. He never returned to Montenegro after fleeing the Austro-Hungarian invasion of 1916.
