1921Kronstadt rebellion suppressedBolshevik forces crush the sailors' uprising at Kronstadt naval baseSailors and workers at the Kronstadt naval base near Petrograd rose up demanding political freedoms and an end to Bolshevik one-party rule. The Red Army under Mikhail Tukhachevsky stormed the fortress across the ice, crushing the revolt after roughly ten days of fighting. Thousands were killed or later executed, and the episode pushed Lenin toward the New Economic Policy.
1921Treaty of Riga signedPeace treaty ends the Polish-Soviet WarPoland and Soviet Russia signed the Treaty of Riga, ending the Polish-Soviet War and fixing their common border for the next two decades. The treaty divided disputed territories in Belarus and Ukraine between the two states. It remained the basis of Poland's eastern frontier until the Soviet invasion of 1939.
