1844 – 1900Umberto I (1844-1900)Died 29 July 1900, aged 56King of Italy from 1878, Umberto I was shot and killed in Monza by the anarchist Gaetano Bresci, who said he was avenging victims of an earlier crackdown on protesters. His assassination brought his son Victor Emmanuel III to the throne. It was one of several anarchist killings of European heads of state around the turn of the century.
