• 1900 Paris Métro opens First line of the Paris underground railway begins service Line 1 of the Paris Métro opened between Porte Maillot and Porte de Vincennes to coincide with the World's Fair. The system used a distinctive design of cast-iron station entrances by Hector Guimard. It grew into one of the busiest metro networks in the world.
