• 1900 Commonwealth of Australia Constitution Act receives royal assent Legislation federating the Australian colonies The British Parliament passed the act uniting six separate colonies into the federated Commonwealth of Australia, to take effect on 1 January 1901. Queen Victoria gave royal assent on 9 July 1900. It remains the founding constitutional document of modern Australia.
