1829Mexico abolishes slaveryPresident Guerrero issues a nationwide emancipation decreeMexican President Vicente Guerrero issued a decree abolishing slavery throughout Mexico, including in the northern territory of Texas. The decree angered Anglo-American settlers in Texas who relied on enslaved labor, deepening tensions that would contribute to the Texas Revolution. Mexico became one of the earliest nations in the Americas to end slavery.
