1829Spanish invasion of Mexico defeated at TampicoSpain's last attempt to reconquer Mexico failsA Spanish expeditionary force landed near Tampico in an attempt to reclaim Mexico for Spain following its independence. Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna besieged the Spanish troops, who surrendered after disease and the summer climate devastated their ranks. The defeat ended Spain's hopes of retaking its former colony.
