1819Founding of SingaporeStamford Raffles establishes a British trading post on the islandSir Thomas Stamford Raffles signed a treaty with the Sultan of Johor and the Temenggong of Singapore to establish a British East India Company trading post on the island. The settlement grew rapidly into one of the most important ports in Southeast Asia. It later became a British crown colony and today is the independent city-state of Singapore.
1819Missouri statehood crisis beginsTallmadge Amendment ignites sectional dispute over slaveryRepresentative James Tallmadge of New York proposed an amendment to Missouri's statehood bill that would have barred further introduction of slaves and freed those born in the new state at age twenty-five. The House passed it over fierce Southern objection, igniting a sectional crisis over the expansion of slavery into new territories. The dispute was not resolved until the Missouri Compromise the following year.
1819Adams-Onis Treaty signedSpain cedes Florida to the United StatesThe United States and Spain signed a treaty in which Spain ceded Florida to the US and renounced claims to the Pacific Northwest, while the US gave up claims to Texas. The treaty also fixed the western boundary of the Louisiana Purchase. It was ratified by both governments in 1821.
