• 1819 Missouri statehood crisis begins Tallmadge Amendment ignites sectional dispute over slavery Representative James Tallmadge of New York proposed an amendment to Missouri's statehood bill that would have barred further introduction of slaves and freed those born in the new state at age twenty-five. The House passed it over fierce Southern objection, igniting a sectional crisis over the expansion of slavery into new territories. The dispute was not resolved until the Missouri Compromise the following year.
