• 1819 Founding of Singapore Stamford Raffles establishes a British trading post on the island Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles signed a treaty with the Sultan of Johor and the Temenggong of Singapore to establish a British East India Company trading post on the island. The settlement grew rapidly into one of the most important ports in Southeast Asia. It later became a British crown colony and today is the independent city-state of Singapore.
