1814 – 1874Anders Jonas Angstrom (1814-1874)Died 21 June 1874, aged 59Angstrom was a Swedish physicist and a founder of the science of spectroscopy. His precise measurements of the solar spectrum used a unit of length later named the angstrom in his honor. He also produced an early atlas of the solar spectrum.
1814 – 1884Charles Reade (1814-1884)Died 11 April 1884, aged 69Charles Reade was an English novelist and dramatist best known for his historical novel The Cloister and the Hearth. He was a prominent figure in Victorian popular fiction and also wrote widely on social reform issues. He died in London.
1814 – 1869Edwin Stanton (1814-1869)Died 24 December 1869, aged 55Edwin Stanton served as United States Secretary of War under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson, overseeing Union military logistics during the Civil War. His dismissal by Andrew Johnson in 1868 helped trigger Johnson's impeachment. Stanton died days after being confirmed to the US Supreme Court, before he could take his seat.

He served as United States minister to Austria and later to Great Britain. His histories were widely read in the nineteenth century for their narrative style.

1814 – 1886Samuel J. Tilden (1814-1886)Died 4 August 1886, aged 72Samuel J. Tilden, the Democratic governor of New York and presidential candidate, died at his estate in Yonkers. He won the popular vote in the disputed 1876 presidential election but lost the presidency to Rutherford B. Hayes after a contested electoral count. He left much of his fortune to found what became the New York Public Library.
