As governor of Massachusetts, his support for a contorted electoral district map gave rise to the term "gerrymander." He died in office in Washington, D.C.
1814Union between Sweden and Norway formedNorway accepts the Swedish crown while keeping its constitutionAfter a brief war, the Norwegian parliament agreed to a personal union with Sweden under King Charles XIII while retaining the constitution adopted at Eidsvoll. The arrangement gave Norway more autonomy than most contemporary political unions. The union lasted until Norway's peaceful separation from Sweden in 1905.
