1740 – 1814Marquis de Sade (1740-1814)Died 2 December 1814, aged 74Sade was a French writer and nobleman whose explicit and transgressive fiction gave rise to the term "sadism." He spent much of his adult life imprisoned or confined in asylums for his writings and conduct. He died at the Charenton asylum near Paris, where he had been confined since 1803.

News traveled slowly, so fighting continued for weeks, including the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815. The treaty resolved none of the war's original grievances but ended hostilities.
