1792September MassacresMob killings of prisoners in ParisBetween 2 and 6 September 1792, fearing counter-revolutionary conspiracies amid foreign invasion, Parisian crowds and militia stormed prisons and killed more than 1,000 inmates, including priests and aristocrats. The massacres took place amid panic following the fall of Longwy and Verdun to Prussian forces. They marked an early instance of revolutionary mass violence that foreshadowed the Terror.
