1792September MassacresMob killings of prisoners in ParisBetween 2 and 6 September 1792, fearing counter-revolutionary conspiracies amid foreign invasion, Parisian crowds and militia stormed prisons and killed more than 1,000 inmates, including priests and aristocrats. The massacres took place amid panic following the fall of Longwy and Verdun to Prussian forces. They marked an early instance of revolutionary mass violence that foreshadowed the Terror.
1792Battle of ValmyFrench revolutionary army halts the Prussian advanceOn 20 September 1792 French forces under Generals Dumouriez and Kellermann checked the advance of a Prussian-led invasion force near Valmy in Champagne. The largely improvised French army's unexpected stand saved the revolution from early defeat. The victory was announced in Paris the day before the monarchy was abolished.
1792French First Republic ProclaimedNational Convention abolishes the monarchyOn 21 September 1792 the newly elected National Convention voted to abolish the French monarchy, and the following day it declared France a republic. Louis XVI, stripped of his throne, was later tried and executed in January 1793. The declaration marked the end of over a thousand years of French monarchy.
