2000Announcement of a draft human genomeRival teams present a working sequence at the White HouseOn 26 June 2000 President Bill Clinton, joined by satellite by Prime Minister Tony Blair, announced that the publicly funded Human Genome Project and the private company Celera had each produced a working draft of the human genetic code. The competing sequences were published in February 2001. The project was declared essentially complete in 2003.
2000The Vatican reveals the Third Secret of FatimaThe Church discloses a long-withheld 1917 prophecyOn 26 June 2000 the Vatican published the text of the so-called Third Secret of Fatima, a vision reported by shepherd children in Portugal in 1917 and kept sealed since 1960. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger read its vision of a "bishop dressed in white" being struck down as foreshadowing the 1981 attempt on Pope John Paul II's life. Some commentators disputed the interpretation.
