• 2000 The London Millennium Bridge opens and closes A pedestrian bridge is shut after an alarming sway The Millennium Bridge, a steel footbridge linking St Paul's Cathedral with Tate Modern across the Thames, opened on 10 June 2000. Crowds set it swaying sideways as pedestrians unconsciously matched their steps to its motion, and it closed two days later. After dampers were fitted it reopened in 2002, by then nicknamed the "wobbly bridge".
