1930 – 2000Hafez al-Assad (1930-2000)Died 10 June 2000, aged 69Hafez al-Assad ruled Syria for nearly thirty years after seizing power in a 1970 coup, building a police state around his Baath party and Alawite loyalists. He crushed a Muslim Brotherhood revolt at Hama in 1982 with tens of thousands of deaths. He was succeeded by his son Bashar.
2000The London Millennium Bridge opens and closesA pedestrian bridge is shut after an alarming swayThe Millennium Bridge, a steel footbridge linking St Paul's Cathedral with Tate Modern across the Thames, opened on 10 June 2000. Crowds set it swaying sideways as pedestrians unconsciously matched their steps to its motion, and it closed two days later. After dampers were fitted it reopened in 2002, by then nicknamed the "wobbly bridge".
