1986The Goal of the CenturyFour minutes after the Hand of God, Maradona collects the ball in his own half and dribbles past five England outfield players and goalkeeper Peter Shilton before scoring. The run covers approximately 60 metres in just over ten seconds. It is later voted the Goal of the Century in a FIFA poll. Both goals — the most controversial and the most celebrated in World Cup history — come in a single match, six minutes apart.
1986The Hand of GodIn the World Cup quarter-final against England, Maradona punches the ball into the net with his left hand. The referee misses the offence and awards the goal. Afterwards Maradona says the goal was scored "a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God" — one of the most brazen and celebrated post-match deflections in sporting history.
