• 1968 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty opened for signature Landmark treaty aims to limit spread of nuclear weapons The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was opened for signature simultaneously in Washington, London and Moscow, committing signatories to curb the spread of nuclear arms while pursuing disarmament. It entered into force in 1970 and became the cornerstone of international non-proliferation efforts. Most of the world's nations eventually joined it.
