1937Toyota Motor Company establishedToyota Motor Company is established as an independent company on 28 August 1937, separated from Toyoda Automatic Loom Works. The name is changed from 'Toyoda' to 'Toyota' — in Japanese, 'Toyota' takes eight strokes to write (a lucky number) versus ten for 'Toyoda,' and the new name sounds cleaner and more suitable for an international brand. The company builds its first dedicated automobile factory in Koromo (later renamed Toyota City) the same year. Production begins at 150 vehicles per month.
