1930Carol II becomes King of RomaniaExiled prince returns and replaces his young son on the thronePrince Carol, who had given up his right to the throne in 1925, flew back to Bucharest from exile. Parliament proclaimed him King Carol II on 8 June, replacing his son Michael. His reign moved Romania toward royal dictatorship.
1930Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act signedUS raises import duties on thousands of goodsPresident Herbert Hoover signed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, which raised US tariffs on more than 20,000 imported goods. Trading partners retaliated with tariffs of their own. The act is widely blamed for deepening the collapse of world trade during the Great Depression.
1930 – 2019Ross Perot (1930-2019)Died 9 July 2019, aged 89Ross Perot was an American businessman who founded Electronic Data Systems and Perot Systems, and ran two independent presidential campaigns in 1992 and 1996. His 1992 run drew nearly 19 percent of the popular vote, one of the strongest third-party showings in modern US history. He died in Dallas of leukemia.
1930Allied occupation of the Rhineland endsLast French troops leave five years ahead of scheduleThe last French troops left the Rhineland under the terms agreed at the Hague Conference on the Young Plan. The Treaty of Versailles had allowed the occupation to continue until 1935. Germany still had to keep the Rhineland demilitarised.
1930Anglo-Iraqi Treaty signedBritain agrees to end its mandate over IraqBritain and the Kingdom of Iraq signed a treaty providing for Iraqi independence and admission to the League of Nations. In return, Britain kept air bases and military rights. Iraq became independent in 1932.
