1899First Hague Peace ConferenceNations meet to codify the laws of warRepresentatives from 26 nations met at the initiative of Tsar Nicholas II to discuss disarmament and the laws of war. The conference produced the Hague Conventions of 1899, governing the conduct of war and the peaceful settlement of disputes, and established the Permanent Court of Arbitration. It was the first major multilateral effort to codify international law on warfare.
