He died of a genetic vasculitis condition in Bonn. The unit of frequency, the hertz, is named in his honor.
1894Manchester Ship Canal opensInland Manchester becomes a seaportThe Manchester Ship Canal opened to shipping on 1 January 1894, connecting Manchester to the Irish Sea and allowing ocean-going vessels to reach the city directly. Queen Victoria formally opened it in May 1894. It was one of the largest civil engineering projects of the Victorian era and transformed Manchester into a major port.
