• 1881 Muhammad Ahmad proclaims himself the Mahdi Beginning of the Mahdist uprising in Sudan Muhammad Ahmad, a religious teacher in Sudan, declared himself the Mahdi, the prophesied redeemer of Islam, and called for revolt against Egyptian and British rule. His declaration ignited the Mahdist War, which would consume Sudan for over a decade. The revolt eventually led to the fall of Khartoum and the death of General Gordon in 1885.
