1881Pasteur demonstrates his anthrax vaccinePublic trial at Pouilly-le-Fort proves vaccination worksLouis Pasteur publicly tested his attenuated anthrax vaccine on sheep and cattle at Pouilly-le-Fort, vaccinating half a herd and leaving the rest unprotected before exposing all the animals to live anthrax. Every unvaccinated animal died while the vaccinated ones survived. The demonstration proved the practical value of vaccination beyond Jenner's smallpox work and made Pasteur an international celebrity.
1881Muhammad Ahmad proclaims himself the MahdiBeginning of the Mahdist uprising in SudanMuhammad Ahmad, a religious teacher in Sudan, declared himself the Mahdi, the prophesied redeemer of Islam, and called for revolt against Egyptian and British rule. His declaration ignited the Mahdist War, which would consume Sudan for over a decade. The revolt eventually led to the fall of Khartoum and the death of General Gordon in 1885.
