• 1879 Treaty of Gandamak Signed Afghanistan cedes control of foreign affairs to Britain The treaty ended the first phase of the Second Anglo-Afghan War, with Emir Yaqub Khan ceding Afghan territory and control of foreign policy to Britain in exchange for an annual subsidy. A British mission was installed in Kabul under Sir Louis Cavagnari. The settlement collapsed within months when the mission was massacred.
