1810 – 1879William Froude (1810-1879)Died 4 May 1879, aged 68William Froude was an English engineer and naval architect who pioneered the scientific study of ship hydrodynamics. He developed methods for predicting a ship's resistance and stability using scale models, still known as Froude scaling. His work laid the foundation for modern naval architecture and towing-tank testing.
1879Treaty of Gandamak SignedAfghanistan cedes control of foreign affairs to BritainThe treaty ended the first phase of the Second Anglo-Afghan War, with Emir Yaqub Khan ceding Afghan territory and control of foreign policy to Britain in exchange for an annual subsidy. A British mission was installed in Kabul under Sir Louis Cavagnari. The settlement collapsed within months when the mission was massacred.
