• 1839 Aroostook War border crisis The United States and Britain mobilize over a disputed frontier A long-running dispute over the border between Maine and New Brunswick escalated into a military standoff, as Maine mobilized its militia and the United States Congress authorized federal troops. The crisis ended without serious bloodshed after General Winfield Scott negotiated a truce between the two sides. The border was finally settled by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty in 1842.
