1772 – 1839Mikhail Speransky (1772-1839)Died 11 February 1839, aged 67Mikhail Speransky served as a leading statesman and legal reformer under Tsars Alexander I and Nicholas I of Russia. He is best known for overseeing the compilation of the Digest of Laws of the Russian Empire, the first systematic codification of Russian law. He died in Saint Petersburg shortly after being made a count.
1839Aroostook War border crisisThe United States and Britain mobilize over a disputed frontierA long-running dispute over the border between Maine and New Brunswick escalated into a military standoff, as Maine mobilized its militia and the United States Congress authorized federal troops. The crisis ended without serious bloodshed after General Winfield Scott negotiated a truce between the two sides. The border was finally settled by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty in 1842.
