• 1835 Treaty of New Echota signed Treaty ceding Cherokee lands in the southeastern United States A faction of Cherokee leaders signed a treaty with the US government ceding all Cherokee territory east of the Mississippi River in exchange for land in Indian Territory and compensation. The treaty was not recognized by the elected Cherokee government and became the legal basis for the forced removal known as the Trail of Tears.
