1835Siege of BéxarTexan forces capture San Antonio from Mexican troopsTexan volunteer forces besieged the Mexican garrison at San Antonio de Béxar for nearly two months. The siege ended when General Martín Perfecto de Cos surrendered the town, a major early victory for the Texas Revolution.
1835Great Fire of New YorkFire destroys much of lower Manhattan's financial districtA fire broke out in a Manhattan warehouse and, fanned by bitter winter winds, destroyed some 530 buildings in New York City's financial district, including most of the Merchants' Exchange. Losses were estimated at over $20 million, bankrupting many insurance companies.
