• 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act Passed in Britain New Poor Law overhauls relief for the poor The British Parliament passed the Poor Law Amendment Act, overhauling the centuries-old system of poor relief. The law pushed destitute people into workhouses rather than providing relief in their own homes, grouping parishes into unions to share the cost. It became one of the most reviled pieces of Victorian social legislation.
