1752 – 1834Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752-1834)Died 7 August 1834, aged 82Jacquard was a French weaver and inventor who devised a punched-card mechanism that automated the weaving of complex patterns into cloth. The Jacquard loom's use of punched cards to control a machine's operations later influenced the design of early computing devices such as Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine. He died in Oullins, near Lyon.
1782 – 1834Robert Morrison (1782-1834)Died 1 August 1834, aged 52Morrison was a Scottish Presbyterian missionary who became the first Protestant missionary in China and compiled an influential Chinese-English dictionary. He translated the Bible into Chinese and served as an interpreter for the British East India Company in Canton. He died in Guangzhou after 27 years in China.
