It became the first American college to admit women alongside men and one of the first to admit Black students, and it developed close ties to the abolitionist movement. It later grew into Oberlin College.
1833American Anti-Slavery Society foundedAbolitionists organize a national movement in PhiladelphiaDelegates including William Lloyd Garison met in Philadelphia from 4 to 6 December 1833 to found the American Anti-Slavery Society, demanding immediate abolition of slavery in the United States. The society became a leading vehicle for abolitionist organizing and publishing in the decades before the Civil War. It drew members from across the northern states.
