1823Monroe Doctrine proclaimedUS warns Europe against colonizing the AmericasIn his annual message to Congress, President James Monroe declared that the United States would regard further European colonization or intervention in the Americas as an act of aggression. The policy, later named the Monroe Doctrine, became a cornerstone of US foreign policy for a century. It was partly aimed at discouraging Spain from reconquering its former colonies in Latin America.

Later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, it helped fix the enduring image of Santa Claus as a jolly, sleigh-driving gift-giver. The poem became one of the best-known pieces of English-language verse associated with Christmas.
