1822Battle of PichinchaPatriot victory secures independence for QuitoForces under Antonio Jose de Sucre defeated the Spanish royalist army on the slopes of the Pichincha volcano near Quito. The victory ended Spanish rule in the region and led to the incorporation of Quito into Gran Colombia. It was a decisive step toward the independence of present-day Ecuador.
