1822Agustin de Iturbide crowned Emperor of MexicoMexican congress proclaims Iturbide emperor as Agustin IFollowing independence from Spain, the Mexican congress proclaimed army general Agustin de Iturbide as Emperor Agustin I. He was crowned in Mexico City, establishing the short-lived First Mexican Empire. His reign collapsed within a year amid military revolt.
1822Battle of PichinchaPatriot victory secures independence for QuitoForces under Antonio Jose de Sucre defeated the Spanish royalist army on the slopes of the Pichincha volcano near Quito.
