1819Six Acts passed in BritainParliament restricts public assembly and the press after PeterlooIn response to the Peterloo Massacre, the British Parliament passed a package of six laws restricting public meetings, authorizing searches for weapons, speeding up trials for sedition, and taxing cheap political pamphlets. The acts were intended to suppress radical reform agitation. They were widely condemned by reformers as repressive.
1819Alabama admitted as 22nd US stateAlabama joins the UnionAlabama was admitted to the United States as the twenty-second state, carved out of the former Mississippi Territory. Its admission added to the growing sectional balance debate between free and slave states that would soon erupt over Missouri's statehood. Huntsville served briefly as the first state capital.
1819Congress of Angostura founds Republic of ColombiaBolivar's union of Venezuela and New Granada is proclaimedThe Congress of Angostura, convened earlier in the year, proclaimed the union of Venezuela and New Granada as the Republic of Colombia, the forerunner of Gran Colombia. Simon Bolivar was named president of the new republic. The union later also incorporated Ecuador and Panama before splitting apart in 1830.
