1816Bombardment of AlgiersAnglo-Dutch fleet attacks the Barbary regency to end Christian slaveryA British and Dutch naval force under Lord Exmouth bombarded the port of Algiers to compel the Dey to release European and American captives and halt the practice of enslaving Christian sailors. The attack forced the Dey to accept terms, though piracy from the Barbary coast was not fully suppressed until the 1830 French conquest.
