1816Java returned to Dutch ruleBritish colonial administration hands the island back under the 1814 Convention of LondonHaving administered Java since seizing it from the Dutch East Indies government in 1811, Britain formally transferred control of the island back to the Kingdom of the Netherlands under the terms of the Convention of London. The handover restored Dutch colonial authority over Java after a brief interlude of British rule under Thomas Stamford Raffles.
1816Bombardment of AlgiersAnglo-Dutch fleet attacks the Barbary regency to end Christian slaveryA British and Dutch naval force under Lord Exmouth bombarded the port of Algiers to compel the Dey to release European and American captives and halt the practice of enslaving Christian sailors. The attack forced the Dey to accept terms, though piracy from the Barbary coast was not fully suppressed until the 1830 French conquest.
