• 1814 George Stephenson builds the Blucher locomotive An early steam locomotive hauls coal wagons Engineer George Stephenson completed his first steam locomotive, named Blucher, at the Killingworth colliery in northern England. It could haul eight loaded coal wagons up a hill at about four miles per hour. The project helped establish Stephenson's reputation as a pioneer of railway locomotion.
